long weekend = two workouts in a day?

25 May

The laaaaaazy Monday started with sleeping in, and then a smoothie!

Rice milk, spinach and blueberries in this one!

IMG_1938IMG_1939

In a beer glass, no less. That glass did NOT know what hit him… :)

IMG_1943IMG_1944

Followed by some hot cereal. I have no idea what this is called in English. But here’s the box. :) This was sooo delicious with just some Natural Balance and salt.

IMG_1941IMG_1942

Mutant apple…

IMG_1945

Mmmmm… coffee. I just want to hug it!

IMG_1946

Well after lunch, we were off for a run! We drove into the park, where I used to train with SOF (back when I had it in me to wake up at an ungodly hour of 4.30am :) ).

Gearing up – soo much equipment. :)

2010-05-24_14-58-58_622 2010-05-24_14-59-40_807 2010-05-24_14-59-57_1 2010-05-24_15-00-29_300

And, we are back! Glorious 11km along the lake shore. It was definitely too hot for a run though. I didn’t mind the heat, but Vlad was melting!!!

Guzzling water is a must!

2010-05-24_16-15-06_572 2010-05-24_16-15-15_618

We were DRIPPING. Here’s a shot of my arm, as I was driving home. Gross, right? Nah…. I kinda like it. Means I worked hard. :)

2010-05-24_16-39-22_254

Ummmm…. did I mention that I had an SOF workout right after the run? Yep. I showered (not sure why) and literally stuffed some food down my throat before bolting for the door.

Tomatoes with chickpeas and soy sauce and sweet/spicy mustard with a slice of bread and some nuts on the side. :)

Back from yet another amazing workout – what’s for dinner?

IMG_1947

Rehash of yesterday – I swear this tastes better than it looks!

IMG_1953

Topped with salsa and sweet and spicy mustard!

IMG_1968

Well-deserved amber goodness!

IMG_1956

And snacks!!!!! Mmmmmm – blue corn chips + salsa. YES! YES! YES!

IMG_1964 IMG_1966

And I’m out…..

warm yoga, hot yoga, Socasize

24 May

Check out my hefty snack from last night, as we were watching Supernatural. :)

part 1 = peanut butter + Crofter’s

part 2 = peanut butter + banana

IMG_1907

In the morning I felt like oatmeal. And like a smoothie. Solution? Have lighter versions of both.

Smoothie = rice milk + frozen strawberries. I would normally include peanut butter and/or tofu. I found rice milk to be more watery than soy milk in general. Think switching from 2% milk to skim, it just feels… watery. I really like the taste though – especially Vanilla!

IMG_1909

Oatmeal = Scottish oats + sliced banana + maple syrup + pecans. Again, this would normally rock some sort of nut butter.

IMG_1915 IMG_1917

Vlad’s revamped tuna melt. In absence of tuna, it turned into a sardine melt!

Sardine melt = whole wheat bread + spinach + can of sardines + mayo + reduced fat mozarella. All baked in the oven for about 10 minutes.

IMG_1918

I was teaching two yoga classes back to back today – reduced heat followed by hot yoga. I gotta say I kinda enjoy this whole “wearing flip flops to work, because I’m going to be barefoot anyway” thing. :)

A Perfect 10 bar from my car stash. Never tried these before. I nibbled down about half before the hot yoga.

IMG_1921

Check out the amazing ingredient list! Much better than Cliff or Luna bars. So nice and short! Taste and texture wise, this was similar to Larabars, although at 210 calories, this one is a little lighter. Lemon flavour would not be my first choice though. It just tastes a little strange.

IMG_1922

I also munched on a banana between yoga classes (peanut butter and almonds just felt too heavy).

IMG_1924 IMG_1925

Whew… lots of heat in my day today. I was chugging water on my way home like there is no tomorrow.

For dinner – my last package of Shanghai noodles. This did not come with any flavoured baggies, and I actually liked that. You have to add your own ingredients for taste. The actual noodles of course do not taste like much – they are meant to be pretty bland.

IMG_1926 IMG_1930

Two minute creation = remainder of fried tofu + olives + bean sprouts + lentils + soy sauce. Just heat through, and pour over noodles.

IMG_1929

Full presentation. I inhaled the whole plate in under two minutes. Sooooo hungry! Or hangry, as some may say… :)

IMG_1933

Workout for the day was Socasize with Ayanna. I’ve never tried it before, but heard about it, so when a free one was offered at my local Lululemon, I decided to check it out. I ran to the mall, did the class and ran back. Came dripping!!!!

image

The actual class was a lot of fun, and really challenging too. We poke fun at yoga and dance aerobics sometimes at SOF, but I know the truth! :) Just because it looks fun, doesn’t make it easy. My arms were burning!

Despite some trouble with the music, we managed to get an amazing workout. The moves came from various styles of dance, including Soca, zouk, merengue and others I could not pronounce.

I see more Socasize in my future… :)

Off for a late night snack + Supernatural…

cottage on the lake

23 May

This morning started early for a weekend, because Vlad had a dentist appointment. We headed out together, as the plan was to go to friends’ cottage right after!

Breakfast had to fill me up until well after noon:

I love Kashi crunchy cereals. I haven’t met one that I didn’t like.

IMG_1837

Cereal beefed up with rice milk and banana. And a coffee!

IMG_1838

Toast with crunchy peanut butter and jam.

IMG_1842

After the appointment, we drove to the cottage – it took us only about an hour, and not counting the pouring rain we caught at some point, it was a beautiful drive – scenic route, for sure.

The little cozy cottage…

IMG_1875

… right on the lake.

IMG_1862

Anyone know what these are? These are tomatoes!!! Well, young tomato plants to be exact.

IMG_1848

First things first:

IMG_1843 IMG_1851IMG_1845IMG_1854

I was very excited about the yellow portion of this BBQ:

IMG_1852

I brought few pitas from home – hummus + Boston lettuce + orange bell pepper + salsa!

IMG_1855

Busy day!

We smiled…

IMG_1856 IMG_1857

… blew bubbles…

IMG_1858 IMG_1860

… laughed… (this picture looks familiar… remember this?)

IMG_1863 IMG_1865 IMG_1866

IMG_1867

… played soccer… some of us without shoes.

IMG_1873

… ate some more…

IMG_1893

… read… upside down…

IMG_1891

… made new friends…

IMG_1896

this is Winston, the neighbour’s St.Bernard/Bernese mix. I saw him over the fence, and immediately headed over to introduce myself. As a result, fifteen of us found ourselves running around the grounds with a stick, and laughing hysterically…

IMG_1881

On our way home, we stopped at McDonald’s to get some water. At the cash register I glanced at the menu and noted that bottled water is probably the only thing worth getting here… On our way in, we ran into a woman and her son, holding three large bags of food and a tray with at least six carbonated drinks in it. That was dinner… for the whole family… :(

I took a picture with Shrek though.

vegan sloppy joe

22 May

As I grabbed my pre-cooked Scottish oats from the fridge, they went from this:

IMG_1765

… to this. Featuring coconut milk + shredded coconut + carob chips + pumpkin granola + strawberries + peanut butter.

IMG_1769 IMG_1773

Lunchtime yoga class was hot and sweaty. Even though it was only an hour, it definitely seemed longer! It was good to see Dasha and Becca there too. And guess what? It’s Becca’s birthday!!!

Happy Birthday, Becca!!!

Lunch was definitely a highlight of my day:

Zucchini + mushrooms + bean sprouts + frozen peas + fried tofu with water and soy sauce.

IMG_1790

And… a vegan sloppy joe!

IMG_1805

Vegan Sloppy Joe

Ingredients:

  • 1 foccacia bun
  • 1/2 can of lentils
  • 2 tbsp of salsa (I used mango and lime salsa)
  • mustard
  • spinach

Toast the focaccia bun. Put some fresh spinach on the bottom half. Drain lentils. Mix with salsa and mustard. Pile high on top of the spinach. You can add some extra mustard on the top bun for extra flavour.

IMG_1800

With remaining carrot juice…

IMG_1802

The SOF workout was MEAN today. :) I loved it… Obviously.

We had to get three 35-45 lb sandbags up the hill. And, no, you don’t just carry it up the hill. You pick it up, throw as far as you can, run towards it, do a push-up, run all the way back to the bottom, and then to the bag again. Pick it up, throw as far as you can, repeat, repeat. We also had to complete 250 push-ups and 500 crunches as a team.

We also did the COOLEST exercise ever – a wheelbarrow with a sandbag on your back. In a regular wheelbarrow, someone picks up your feet, and you walk forward using your hands. In this version, you first balance a sandbag on your back, and THEN someone picks up your feet. This works your core like there is no tomorrow!!!

Then we travelled all across the football field, doing a sandbag pass to each other (with two bags going at a time). All the way to the chin-ups bars, where the corporal misinterpreted the exhausted look on my face as boredom. :)

That’s the only way I can explain the next few exercises that were thrown my way. As we were trying to complete 80 chin-ups (team total), I somehow ended up doing chin-ups with a 35 lb sandbag between my thighs!!!! These turbo chin-ups counted as a whopping 1.1 rep. Yippeeee… I did ten. No, not in a row. LOL

Oh, and did I mention ONE-LEGGED misery switches? Of course, misery was loaded with a couple of steel rebars. Then ONE-ARMED misery switches?

OMG. I was gushing about this madness to Vlad, and he had this confused look on this face the whole time. Then finally he said: “So which part of THAT was fun???”. Haha. To an SOF-er, that WHOLE thing was FUN. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!

Friday night and an amazing workout. Celebrate!

IMG_1813

I grabbed lentil chips on my last trip to the supermarket at my brother’s recommendation. They really were amazing! Thanks, Alex!

More food: remainder of squash soup with 1/2 pita and New Balance.

IMG_1825

And a salad! Spinach + broccoli sprouts + tomatoes + mango & lime salsa + pepitas (pumpkin seeds) + all-bran cereal + balsamic vinegar + EVOO (extra virgin olive oil).

IMG_1822

Few hours later: mutant apple + crunchy peanut butter. This definitely gave me enough energy to endure couple of episodes of Supernatural. Finishing up Season 3!!!!

chickpea apple salad

20 May

I think this is my first lunch in a week that is taking place at an actual lunch time! The yoga class went really well today (I thought). We even did a couple of poses of the Iyengar wall with straps. Lots of core work. The guys were huffing and puffing by the end. :)

Glorious lunch:

part 1 – sauteed mushrooms (in water and soy sauce) + avocado + sweet and spicy mustard on foccacia bread

part 2 – spinach + green apple + cucumber + walnuts + sunflower seeds + apple vinegar + sesame oil salad

Mmmmmm…

IMG_1746

Dessert. These are still not rocking my world. I gave one to a coworker who buys figs all the time. She said that these are not the best out there, as the skin is a little bit bitter. Also, the best figs are sweeter. I don’t know if I will be giving these another try though. I can see them working in recipes better than by themselves.

There is also something really creepy and Dexter-like about the insides of a fresh fig.

IMG_1749

I spent most of the afternoon marking and listening to good music. Eye of the Tiger, anyone? :) Dark Side of the Moon? Oh yeah.

Over half of my students are immigrants. In fact, I think over 80% of them were born outside of Canada. The cultural differences and the experiences they share are mind-blowing sometimes. For example, in Toronto, it is easy to forget that most marriages in the world are still arranged.

Every semester I learn through students’ personal journals about living with an unwanted partner, someone they met the day of the wedding, and living with years later. Often, they feel stuck because children are involved. Often, divorce or any kind of separation is not an option.

In one of my courses, I ask my students to complete an introductory exercise in our first class together. They draw a timeline to represent their past, complete 20 I am statements to represent the present, and 20 things they would like to accomplish before they die (aka bucket list). Every semester at least one student says that they would like to marry the person they love, but can’t because it would be a love marriage. And those are rare in their community. Imagine…

Chickpea Apple Salad

  • 1 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cucumber, cubed
  • 1/2 green apple, cubed
  • 1/2 red onion, cubed
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 3 tbsp pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

IMG_1752

For dressing, I used olive oil + a little mustard mixed with water to make it more liquidy.

IMG_1756

Side dish – mushroom flavoured noodles from the Asian supermarket.

IMG_1755

They tasted really good, but with all the little baggies of questionable spices, I’d say this is an occasional indulgence. :) Missing a photo of a full plate – must have been that hungry!

Zee best carrot juice!

IMG_1760

Zee best bread I’ve ever tasted. Notice how it changes week to week? :)

IMG_1761

Dessert. With crunchy peanut butter. Mmmm…

IMG_1762

Sipping on this, while cooking. Rana, I promise this is the last one! :) Wow, these lasted a LONG time. Mostly, because I couldn’t really get into the taste. They are SOOOO sweet. Crazy how much our palate changes.

IMG_1758

Lately we started eating dinner at respectable time of 6.30pm-7pm, instead of the usual 9pm. :) However, as a result I find myself hungry later in the day. Of course, the solution would be to go to bed earlier. But where is the fun in that?

IMG_1763IMG_1764

Looking forward to a nice hot yoga class tomorrow and SOF in the evening!

Scottish oatmeal

20 May

Ugh… the 3 slices of bread with hummus and an apple were completely unnecessary after dinner last night. I’ve also been feeling kinda lazy with my workouts. I ended up not going to SOF on Tuesday, and decided that yesterday was going to be my OFF day. Need to kick my butt in gear today.

A new breakfast star in my kitchen…

IMG_1726

The texture of Scottish oatmeal is somewhat similar to steel cut oatmeal, however, it cooks faster and is creamier.

I made it with:

  • 1 cup of Scottish oatmeal
  • 3 cups of water
  • a little salt

This makes 4 servings. I actually divided it up right away this time.

IMG_1727

And now I have 3 more breakfasts waiting for me. All in 10 minutes. :)

IMG_1730

I finally broke down and bought this:

IMG_1733

Artisana Cacao Bliss is raw chocolate coconut butter. Yep, I know…. :) And apparently, it’s fairly difficult to find too. I only found it in one health store.

It tastes REALLY good on one condition… you must like chocolate… and coconuts. Vlad has a completely unexplained hatred of coconuts. It is so extreme that sometimes it rubs off on things that have nothing to do with coconut – like cocoa butter, mango, etc.

Although I did gently suggest that he is not going to like the smell of this, he insisted. Mind you, I failed to mention that this chocolatey goodness largely consisted of one edible species he loathes so much. I’ll spare you the details, but the facial expressions and the screaming were priceless.

Scottish oatmeal + 1 tsp of Cacao Bliss (it’s there!) + strawberries + granola.

IMG_1736

Bestest of friends…

IMG_1739

This was my “it’s 10am, and I just feel like chewing on something for absolutely no reason” snack:

IMG_1738

I’m off to teach yoga!!!

what the heck is Solgurt?

20 May

My breakfast had two parts: small sandwich with avocado + tomato AND blueberry Solgurt with strawberries and granola!

IMG_1710 IMG_1711

Yeah, I think I get what people meant when they told me that soy yogurt tastes awful. This was bearable, but it has a very strong aftertaste. Not for the weak of heart…

IMG_1715

I always feel nice and full after breakfast that includes bread – even a little bit! :)

Vlad’s breakfast in two parts also: small sandwich with avocado + mozarella AND plain yogurt with strawberries and granola.

As you can see, we essentially had the same thing!

 IMG_1709   IMG_1708

I was so hungry at lunch that I totally forgot to take a picture of my sandwich! It was 1 slice halved with homemade hummus and tomato. I inhaled it!!!!!

The rest of lunch below: banana + raisins + apple sauce + black coffee with So Good vanilla milk. These little boxes of non-dairy milk are my solution to take out coffee, since regular coffee shops rarely have soy milk, and I can’t really drink coffee black. On the downside, once I open one of these boxes, I gotta finish it – can’t have just a little bit.

IMG_1716

After lunch I headed to the second session of Teaching in the College System course. Oh man, this timeslot is brutal!!!! You gotta be completely rested. I find myself nodding off with even a hint of sleep deprivation. The dry content does not help the matter in the least. Today we talked about different models of curriculum design. Cyclical, rational, dynamic… Sigh.

On the drive home I was staaaarving! Tried to kill the hunger a little bit with sipping on carrot juice. This one:

imageBolthouse Farms Carrot Juice is the best carrot juice I have ever tried, hands down! It has ONE ingredient, and tastes REALLY good. We destroyed a whole bottle recently before a yoga class, and no one believed me when I told them it does not have any added sugar or ANYTHING else for that matter.

I scored a huge bottle of this juice at Walmart today for 3.97! It was 4.97 + 1 dollar off coupon. Yay!

I was also very tempted by one of the Luna bars I keep in the car. But I made myself put it down, after deciding not to spoil appetite before dinner. How disgustingly adult of me!

The dinner in the making.

Squash soup (from the box) with cut up fried tofu:

IMG_1717

With leftover whole wheat couscous with basil and black olives:

IMG_1720

Topped with tomato, spinach and garlic (why does it turn green in the fridge):

IMG_1722

On the side: pita with Moroccan style hummus. On a second thought, I am not crazy about this hummus. I kinda want my hummus to be garlicky, rather than sweet…

IMG_1723

Coffee cup from lunch housed chai tea with soy milk.

30-day trial review

19 May

So it has been 30 days of eating vegan… No animal products, no alcohol (alcohol is vegan, but I threw this in), and mostly no processed food.

Here’s a little Q and A.

How did you feel for the past 30 days?

I felt really good. However, I am healthy and I generally feel good. I felt similarly eating meat, eating gluten-free, and eating sugar-free. On the other hand, I really enjoyed a lot of the foods I was eating. I found myself being more creative with meals, and tried a couple of new ingredients. Also, I find that this is the easiest way for me to eat healthy.

Did you cheat?

Not intentionally. I’m sure there were traces of milk and/or butter in some restaurant foods. But as I said previously, there is only so much you can do. I asked wait staff at every restaurant about ingredients, and beyond that it’s definitely outside of my control.

Was it difficult?

In all honesty, this trial was a lot easier than I anticipated. My initial plan was to go vegetarian for a month, and then vegan, so I could slowly ease myself into it. However, I did not have trouble sticking to a vegan diet at all. I do want to mention though that my diet was probably already more varied that most people’s before the beginning of the trial. For example, I always had almond milk in the kitchen in addition to cow’s milk. I also had quinoa, almond butter, kale and other things potentially deemed strange by individuals eating SAD (Standard American Diet).

Could you eat out?

I ate out a number of times. This included both vegan restaurants, regular restaurants, chains, food courts and family dinners. Again, modifying was not that difficult. I found that sometimes there would only be one or two things on the menu that I could have, but there would always be something.

Did you crave meat?

I did go from eating animal protein every day to full on vegan. However, I am not a type of person who actually craves meat. The only times when I really wanted meat in the past month was when I was cooking it while really hungry. If I didn’t have to cook it, I think it would have been even easier.

Did you miss alcohol?

A couple of times I missed my beer (e.g. rock concert, going out with friends, etc.).  However, what I did not miss is the foggy feeling in the morning (even though I rarely drink more than one or two drinks).

Are you going to continue avoiding alcohol?

No. I do not drink enough for it to be a concern, and an occasional beer never hurt anybody. :)

Now what?

I’m actually going to continue eating vegan for the next little while. For all practical purposes, I am extending the trial by another 30 days. I feel good, I enjoy the food, and I want to give this a good run. Note that at this point I am not considering going vegan permanently or even long-term. For example, I have a couple of trips coming up this summer, and I do not think that eating vegan would be realistic there. I also do not think that avoiding animal products is necessary for a healthy diet. On the other hand, I do think it’s possible to avoid animal products completely AND have a healthy diet. You do need to be smart about what you eat. You do need to think about what you put in your mouth. Some people consider it too much hassle. I say that you should think before eat regardless of whether you are eating vegan or not.

Curiosity was the biggest reason I have decided to do this, and it definitely paid off. Because it is so easy to fill up with meat and starches (rice, pasta, potatoes), I find that we get lazy, and just eat that. So when people would react in horror “do you JUST eat vegetables"?”, I’d smile, because my diet became MORE diverse and interesting, not less, as a result of this trial.

I will be announcing the next 30-day trial I will be doing shortly. Hint – It will be food related. :)

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some vegan food to report on from today:

Just a typical lazy vegan morning:

2010-05-18_09-07-14_999 2010-05-18_08-31-12_809 2010-05-18_08-31-24_263 2010-05-18_08-39-54_752 2010-05-18_08-40-07_65

Hydration after hot yoga – this is my favorite flavour yet!

IMG_1677

So I don’t know if you knew, the whole freaking Toronto is out of coconut water. Apparently, it has been featured on Oprah recently, and it FLEW off the shelves. At one of the stores, they told me to check back in July… Check out the video on the coconut craze and Nutrition Diva’s review here.

Of course, as usual, the benefits and magical properties have been blown out of proportion as usual… This is like goji berries, all over again. And acai before that.

Bottom line? If you are exercising for an hour or less, plain water is all you need. But if you exercise intensely for over an hour, then coconut water is a better choice than neon-colored sports drinks.

I decided to incorporate fried tofu I bought into dinner. I have an unexplained fear of cooking tofu, so this lets me ease into it slowly. :)

IMG_1681

Just sauté fried tofu + mushrooms + zucchini with some soy sauce and water:

IMG_1685

Whole wheat couscous with basil, black olives and garlic:

IMG_1682

Full presentation:

IMG_1700

Something crunchy with dinner. This is the proof of the fact that celebrity advertising works. Jillian Michaels would not stop talking about these chips, and of course, when I saw them on the shelf, I was sold. So easily convinced. Like a child. With mango and lime salsa.

IMG_1692IMG_1687IMG_1686

I found the actual chips too spicy. I will want to try the plainer varieties next. However, the salsa was out of this world.

And the circle of life… What started with a pint, must end with a pint. Beer? Rickard’s Red, of course.

IMG_1691 IMG_1695IMG_1698

Vlad toasting my successful 30-day trial!

day 30 – soldier’s test

18 May

First lecture of the semester for another psychology course this morning. That, and the fact that I’m out of cereal, and other quick breakfasty things. Liquid breakfast it is.

Still plowing away at hemp milk. You’d think that I bought a truckload of this stuff from the time it is taking me to finish 2 cartons.

IMG_1671

Frozen strawberries + banana + hemp milk + 1/4 package of soft tofu. I decided against spinach today.

IMG_1673 IMG_1675

This will taste incredibly good with soy milk. Or rice milk. You know… any OTHER milk. You get the idea. :)

IMG_1676

I was a little bit hungry around 10am – that’s what liquid breakfasts do to me. I guess not enough fat in the shake? A little bit of peanut butter next time may solve the problem, but it also adds flavour to the shake, which I do not necessarily want all the time.

I always always underestimate how long things would take me! Today I didn’t pack lunch, thinking that I’ll be home in time. Of course, with trying to figure out parking, and with a grocery shopping trip, I didn’t have “lunch” until 4pm. GAH.

Had a ReBar around noon though. Watch out for photos – starting now all pictures in this post have been taken with my Milestone.

2010-05-17_13-23-29_562 2010-05-17_13-25-30_235

My SOF buddies would be so stoked about this bar. :) We use rebars quite a bit. Of course, we call them rifles. :)

I was not crazy about this bar at all. It was chewy, and filling, and definitely did the trick, but flavour? Meh… Will be moving on to other things. I tend to buy a couple of bars (whichever are on sale) when I do grocery shopping, and throw them in my car for emergencies, such as this one. I don’t usually eat these on a regular basis, because it gets really expensive. And, I’d rather eat some fruit anyway.

My 4pm lunch was INHALED with grocery bags still on the doorstep. I only had 2 hours before SOF, so it was now or never. This whole eating-before-working-out is a tricky business.

Ciabatta bread with homemade hummus, tomato, and soy bean sprouts.

2010-05-17_16-07-10_325

Spinach salad with cucumber, soy bean sprouts, tomato, balsamic vinegar and sesame oil.

2010-05-17_16-07-49_169  2010-05-17_16-09-18_895

*It seems that the photos taken with Milestone are more elongated than the ones taken with a regular camera.

Caffeine about 90 minutes before exercise functions as a mild performance enhancer. :) Yep.

2010-05-17_16-07-57_685

Now what is this talk about Soldier’s Test? Soldier’s Test is given to all SOF recruits once a month. It’s a set of exercises that is exactly the same month to month, therefore, allowing to track your own progress, and to engage in some friendly competition. :)

It consists of:

  • 1 mile run – fastest time possible (the faster you run, the more points you score)
  • chin-ups – max #
  • push-ups – max #
  • shoulder press (45 lbs) – max #
  • supported sit-ups – maximum number in 1 minute

The run is always first, and then you can pick the order of exercises. So strategy comes into play as well. :)

I was freaking about this test all day today. You see I’ve only done this test once. The very first month that I joined which was last July. And I did really well. Isn’t that a good thing, you ask? It is. But with running a mile in 6:05, it’s a tough act to follow, if I say so myself. Especially knowing that I was mostly off running for the past 6 months, thanks to my knee injury.

As I predicted, my running time took a dive (6:24), however, I improved on every other exercise!!! Whoo hoo. I think part of it was the fact that I had a specific number to beat for each of the exercises, and I was determined to beat the previous score by at least one rep.

Chin-ups went from 10 to 16. Push-ups from 39 to 41 (I think). Shoulder press from 18 to 21. Sit-ups from 43 to 53. Not bad. :)

On a less positive note, I found a big gift on the grass that some doggie left for me. Found it with my whole back, as we were doing ranger kicks. Full-on! Mmmmm. Leaving graphic details to your imagination. The rest of the workout was spent in the state of partial nudity. My apologies to the fellow troops and innocent onlookers. :(

By the way, I think I discovered the PERFECT post-workout hydration mix = 1 part water, 1 part plain unsweetened coconut water, 1 shot of POM juice. Potassium, electrolytes, carbs, antioxidants. LOVE.

At home I had one whole wheat pizza crust remaining, so this went into the oven before I jumped in the shower. Tomatoes + spinach + zucchini + mushrooms + basil + pressed garlic.

The amazing smell led me to cutting my shower short – garlicky and divine!

Dipping –> sweet and spicy mustard and homemade hummus (in Sabra container).

Sipping –> club soda with POM for sipping.

I also had two frozen bananas in the freezer. There was one thing to do, and one thing only!!!!

I would like to nominate Gena for a Nobel Prize. Banana soft serve with fresh raspberries.

Vlad admitted yesterday that my 30-day vegan trial was definitely worth it JUST FOR THIS. I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that there is nothing here but fresh fruit. Can I add that this is filling as well??? We both kinda wished we had more frozen bananas, but I was definitely satisfied with this bowl.

Guess what? It’s day 30 today…

day 29 – partner yoga

17 May

This morning we went to partner yoga class at Lululemon taught by Sebastian and Kaelyn. They usually teach partner yoga workshops and Acro Yoga! It’s interesting that I actually know both Sebastian and Kaelyn separately, as they both used to teach at the yoga studios I’ve been to. Toronto yoga community is smaller than you’d think!

Sveta and Sam kept us company. It was the first yoga class for both of them. After stretching each other out, we hit Pickle Barrel for breakfast!

I was so bummed that despite serving fancy coffees they didn’t have soy milk, that I ordered an espresso. Not sure why, since I hate espresso. Gave it another try. Nope, still hate it.

Hmmmm… what to have? Choices, choices…

My breakfast arrived –> minus the gouda, plus the avocado + extra fruit.

Vlad went with eggs Benedict.

That was a popular choice:

Unfortunately, this was the only normal meal I’ve had today. After a completely messed up sleeping schedule for the past three days, I passed out at home, and slept for a good three hours. Vlad ate at his parents, so there was no incentive for me to put together an actual meal at any point. So the waking portion of the day was spent snacking on unpictured bananas, nuts, pumpkin seeds, frozen corn, and other random things. :( Boo… I hate how I feel when I eat like this. Back to normal tomorrow!!!

I bought two kinds of the same variety of apples last time I was grocery shopping: Gala apples – organic and conventional. Today we decided to put the taste to the test. Notice that organic produce always has a 5-digit code, while conventional produce has a 4-digit code.

Organic apple sliced:

Conventional apple sliced:

One person closed their eyes, and the other fed the apples to them in random order. The task was to identify which apple you liked best (first or second), and then which apple was which was revealed.

Notice that we were testing the taste alone! With organic vs. conventional fruit and vegetables, there are other issues to consider as well. The taste is one – which tastes better? Then there is the nutritional consideration – which has more nutrients? which has less pesticides? And it is possible for one apple to have more nutrients, but also have more pesticides. And finally, the political – which is more sustainable / kind to Earth?

We did not arrive at a consensus. I liked the taste of the organic apple better – hands down! However, Vlad preferred the taste of the conventional apple.

I polished off the rest of the apples with some cinnamon, honey and brown sugar on top!

What a busy weekend!!! Finally off to bed.
